RRPP strengthens its EMS

The Rapu-Rapu Polymetallic Project (RRPP) continues to strengthen its environmental management system (EMS) following the completion of gabions along the gully of Hollowstone Creek.

The gabions increased RRPP’s capability to filter total suspended solids in water flowing from its environmental ponds further insuring that water flowing through Hollowstone Creek is within the DENR TSS standard of 70mg per liter of water at all times.

In September 0f 2009, a back-up filter system consisting of a diesel-driven suction pump and two filter tanks were installed by the company filtering turbid water during high flow and reduces suspended solids in treated water going to the constructed wetlands system. Before the installation, reliance was placed on the constructed wetland system and the sediment traps to secure compliance for TSS level.

A back-up generator was also installed early this year guaranteeing continuous power supply for continuous operations of the computerized monitoring system, mechanized lime dosing system, TSS filtration system and the rest of the environmental facilities.

The frequency of water sampling for TSS in three locations was also increased twice a day which is beyond the weekly sampling required by the DENR. The Island News/ Foresight July-Dec. 2010 issue)
