THE NATIONAL GEOHAZARD MAPPING AND ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
by: Arlene E. Dayao, OIC Chief, Geosciences Division

The National Geohazard Mapping and Assessment Program was born in the aftermath of the spate of landslide disasters such as the 2003 Panaon landslides, the Ginsaugon landslide of 2004 and the devastating debris flows and flash floods that ravaged Infanta and Real in the same year. The program initially grew from the need for geohazard maps of even quality and similar levels of mapping that could be used by DENR and MGB authorities each time a landslide disaster strikes. Thus, in 2004, an attempt to standardize geohazard mapping was initiated by the Mines and Goesciences Bureau. A pool of experts from the MGB central office and the regional offices was gathered to formulate standard guidelines for the field assessment, mapping and analysis of all geohazards.  read more
